Lake Burton is the first, in a series of six lakes that follow the original Tallulah River in Rabun County Georgia. The lake has 62 miles of shoreline spanning 2,775 acres and is maintained by Georgia Power. Years ago this series of lakes was the largest producer of hydroelectric power for the state. Lake Burton was formed in 1919 by the creation of the Lake Burton Dam. Lake Burton got it's name from the town of Burton, which now lies at the bottom of the lake. The town was actually founded in the early 19th century due to the first finding of gold where Dicks Creek and the Tallulah River merge.
Lake Rabun Homes are some of the most gorgeous and prestigious lake homes in the southeast, ranging in price from around $500,000 up into the $8,000,000 million plus mark. Numerous well-known people have lived on the lake such as country music singer Allen Jackson and Alabama Football head coach Nick Saban.
A few yearly traditions are the Lake Burton Fireworks show and the Lake Burton Fun Run, to raise charitable contributions for the community.
